Does Wine taste better if you earn Avios points from it?
Probably not, but if you’re an avid points collector then you’ll want to leverage your wine purchases in order to get more points. The good news is that there’s lots of ways to get points when you buy bottles, or in some cases even glasses, of wine.
Latest wine-related Avios offers
Act Quick: Earn 15 Avios per £1 from The Wine Flyer
Before we get into all of the points-earning options, the official way to earn Avios from wine is the BA Wine Flyer. They’ve tripled their Avios per £1 for a limited time, meaning you can earn 15 Avios per £1 instead of 5. If you’re in the market for wine, it’s a high earning rate.
This offer has now ended, You can monitor the earn rate at The Wine Flyer using our new Avios Shopping monitoring microsite. It’s likely that the higher rate will return at some point.
Act Quick: Get 2,000 Extra Avios when you spend £80 with The Wine Flyer on Amex
If you have an Amex card, check your offers. I’m seeing a 2k Avios bonus offer when you spend £80 with The Wine Flyer before the 30th June 2025. The terms require payment to have been taken before that date (so order well before it to ensure it hits your account before the cut off). Aside from that, it’s a wide-open offer if you see it in your account.

Option 1: Use a credit card that earns Avios or Amex points
However you buy your wine, whether in a supermarket, online or even at a restaurant, you can always earn up to 1.5 Avios per £1 you spend using an Avios-earning credit card via Amex or Barclays. If you’re an SME and you want to earn Avios, then there are more cards available to you.
Of course, if you use any of the options below, then using your card will give you even more Avios. The typical 1 to 1.5 Avios earn rate per credit card isn’t huge. Stacking it with another offer will boost your points
Option 2: The Wine Flyer
BA’s official Wine purchasing website, and the option that consistently has the highest Avios earn rates. Not only can you earn Avios, but you can also spend points on wine.
You can earn 20,000 per year if you get a monthly wine subscription. This is paid out as 3,500 on your first monthly delivery and then 2,000 for each delivery after that. You can pause the monthly deliveries at any time. If you cancel your subscription between the first and second orders, they will deduct 2,000 Avios.
In addition, you can also earn Avios without a subscription by buying wine by the bottle or case. The earn rate will be approximately 5 Avios per £1 you spend, which is rounded down. Buying an £8.99 bottle will earn you 45 Avios, and a £22.99 bottle will earn you 115 Avios.
At the time of writing, you can earn a higher rate (12/£) with Harvey Nichols, who sell wine, but that rate is boosted and may reduce in the future. The earn rate for the Wine Flyer has been as high as 15/£ in the past, so it’s worth checking both sites to see which has the best return
Is it worth using Avios to buy wine on The Wine Flyer?
To spend Avios on wine, your points are valued at 0.1p. So a £165.99 case of Wine will cost you 117,262 Avios, which is not a particularly good use of your points. An Avios point could easily be valued at 1p per point, in reality, much higher, so there are many better ways to spend your points.
You can also earn 2,500 Avios if you refer a friend to The Wine Flyer (and they’ll get 2,500 extra Avios too). They have to spend over £125 on their order, and they have three months to transact after you send them a referral link for you to earn your points. They have seven days after you send the link to earn their points.
Option 3: Wine retailers on the Avios Shopping website
The Avios Shopping website lists a number of alcohol retailers with earn rates of up to 12 Avios per £1. Well-known names include:
- The Bottle Club (3 Avios/£)
- Drinkstuff (1 Avios/£)
- Drinkwell (Upto 8 Avios/£)
- Harvey Nichols (12 Avios/£)
- Selfridges (7 Avios/£)
Double stack the above with an Avios earning credit card and you could get upto 13.5 Avios per £1 you spend on wine or alcohol. The Harvey Nichols offer is excellent. That will earn you more than the official Wine Flyer website, although that earn rate is boosted and may come down.
Option 4: Sainsbury’s
If you’re shopping in Sainsbury’s, you can convert your Nectar points into Avios. Nectar converts at a rate of 400 to 250 Avios.
Pay using an Avios or Membership Reward earning card, and you’ll get an extra 1 to 1.5 points per £. Keep an eye out for any offers that could boost your Nectar points.
Option 5: Wine in a rush: Just Eat / Uber Eats / Deliveroo
Need some wine quickly? There are ways to earn Avios via food or grocery delivery apps via the Avios Shopping website.
Just Eat offers good earning potential. New customers earn at 4 Avios/£1, but existing customers can still get 1 Avios/£. That’s a reasonable earn rate. You will have to order it via the website rather than the app,
Uber Eats will give 300 points to new customers if you signup via the Avios Shopping website. It’s not a lot, and let’s face it, who hasn’t already got an Uber Eats account? On the off-chance you don’t, then there’s 300 Avios for the taking.
Deliveroo is offering 10 Avios per £1 for new customers at the moment, but if you already have an account, you can still earn 3 Avios per £. That’s the best rate across all delivery apps, but it’s boosted, and it may reduce in the future. You can keep an eye on the earn rate for Deliveroo using our new Shopping Tracker. As with any purchase from the Avios Shopping website you’ll have to order via the website rather than the app.
Option 6: Buying wine in-store or in a restaurant
You can earn points via Avios Shopping when you shop in-store. The number of retailers that allow this is relatively small, but it’s growing, and it includes some shops that sell wine. The best known is Harvey Nichols, which offers a flat 4/£ rate for any in-store purchases.
You can also earn points at select restaurants. They skew towards the South, but there’s some really good earn rates available, including:
- 10 Avios/£ at Gordan Ramsay’s Lucky Cat, Bread Street Kitchen, Savoy Grill, Heddon Street Kitchen, Petrus, The River Restaurant, Bar & Grill, Restaurant 1890 or Plane Food.
- 10/£ at Nobu Portman Square.
- Market Halls at Canary Wharf and Oxford Street offer 10/£ on drinks orders over £50. For anything under you will earn at 2/£.
Conclusion: Should you be earning points on your wine?
The bigger question is, should you try and earn Avios on any purchase? Unless you have a steady stream of points from an alternative source, like flying with BA, then my advice is to earn points wherever you can.
Wine is a particularly lucrative way to earn points. When the Wine Flyer run their 15 Avios/£ offer, it gives you the opportunity to earn hundreds, even thousands, of points. If you were planning to buy that wine anyways, it’s an easy way to boost your balance.
Buying the occasional bottle of wine or champagne as a gift? In that case, it’s worth doing a review of the wine options on the Avios Shopping website, or making your way to a local Sainsbury’s. A £50 bottle of wine here or there throughout the year can give you a good chunk of points.
If you’re a business and you gift bottles of wine to clients or suppliers, then it’s worth including some of the steps above to add to your points balance.
