Tesco, Avios & Virgin: How to double dip on points

A change in August 2026 will allow you to earn Avios from Tesco purchases

In a surprise move, Tesco has announced that they are expanding its delivery partners. That opens up new opportunities for points collectors, and the ability to double dip on both Avios and Virgin points.

What’s been announced?

If you needed something from Tesco today, you really had only one option: their own-brand Whoosh service. I’ve tried it a few times and found it to be pretty easy to use. They have now announced that, from August 2026, you’ll also be able to order from Tesco via Uber Eats and Deliveroo.

That opens up the ability to earn Avios from Tesco deliveries. The official partnership with British Airways ended back in 2021, but earlier this year Uber announced that you can earn Avios from Uber Eats. That means Tesco deliveries will earn you 1 Avios per £1 you spend.

You cannot, as of right now, earn Avios via Deliveroo. They used to be listed on the Avios Shopping website, but have been removed.

Why was Tesco missing from the usual delivery apps?

If you look in your Deliveroo or Uber Eats app, you’ll see plenty of supermarkets, but never a Tesco. The supermarket wanted to control its distribution, and believed in its own Whoosh app, which is technically part of the main Tesco app.

There are a lot of reasons why they would want to do that, but margin is likely the main one. Integrating with Clubcard was likely important too, as the supermarket sees an enormous amount of value in the data they capture. They were the first UK supermarket to have a mass-market loyalty scheme where the data was used effectively.

Will this make a big difference to your points balance?

No, but my approach to points is to earn them wherever I can. As the Tesco slogan goes, “every little helps”. If I wanted to order something quickly from my local Tesco, I would now use Uber Eats instead of their own Whoosh product.

Can you double dip via Clubcard?

Whilst you cannot turn Clubcard points into Avios, you can transfer them into Virgin Points. The announcement today specifically said that you will be able to “access hundreds of Clubcard Prices and earn Clubcard points” on both Uber Eats and Deliveroo deliveries.

I’m not sure how they will integrate Clubcard and Uber Eats, but when I’ve been in the US I’ve seen that you can do this with local supermarkets loyalty schemes. It’s likely the mechanism already exists, and it’s just a case of connecting up the Clubcard backend, and Uber Eats.

What it does mean is that you’ll earn Avios via Uber Eats, and at the same time you can earn Virgin points via a transfer from your Clubcard. Add on an Avios-earning credit card, and you’ll earn points three different ways.
