Deliveroo: Earning Avios/Virgin points, and how to get free membership

How to leverage Deliveroo to earn more points

It’s one of the UK’s more popular delivery apps, along with Uber Eats. With a little bit of extra effort, you can turn your orders into Avios points. On top of that, you can reduce your costs by having a Deliveroo membership AND you can pick up a membership at zero cost.

How Deliveroo can help you earn points

Deliveroo is on the Avios Shopping website, which means you can earn Avios points every time you order food or groceries. At the time of writing, you can earn 2 points per £ if you’re a current customer, or new customers will earn 7/£ on their first order.

They’re also on the Virgin Shops Away website, with the same earn rate of 2/£ for current customers, and 7/£ for new ones.

Earn rates will change, but you can stay on top of them in our new Avios Shopping Tracker. Visit the Deliveroo page to see the current earn rates for both Avios and Virgin. That page will also show you the historic earn rates.

An important note on earning points

To earn points, you will have to place an order on the website rather than the app. This is a little annoying as most people will turn to the mobile app, but mobile apps are a blackspot when it comes to earning points from brands. That’s down to the inability to track transactions back to the Avios or Virgin shopping website.

What are Deliveroo memberships?

There are three different membership options, two of which anyone can access.

  • Deliveroo Plus Silver, the most basic tier.
  • Deliveroo Plus Gold, an elevated membership tier with more perks.
  • Finally, Deliveroo Plus Diamond, is an invite-only membership tier

You can pay for membership on a monthly or annual basis. With the latter you’ll effectively get two months for free.

How to get Deliveroo Plus Silver for free

If you pay for Amazon Prime, then you can get Deliveroo Plus Silver at no cost. To activate this, log in to your Amazon account, then visit the Prime page. Find the block that says “Deliveroo Plus Silver for a year” and click the claim link then follow the instructions.

This is a valuable perk of being an Amazon Prime member. Note that if you cancel your Prime membership, then you’ll lose access to Deliveroo Plus Silver.

Free Silver for Blue Light cardholders

If you have a Blue Light card, then you can also get Deliveroo Silver for free. You can access this offer via the Blue Light card website by selecting the “Free 12 months of Deliver Plus Silver” offer. You’ll then get an access code that you can enter on the Deliveroo website.

Free Gold for Vitality members

If you use Vitality health insurance, then you can swap the points you collect for 30 days of Deliveroo Gold. This is not an ongoing subscription; you’ll get 30 days of free usage, and then the membership will lapse. You can reactivate it by swapping more points once the 30 days are up.

Save even more, earn more points via Amex Gold

If you have an American Express Gold Card (the personal card, not the business one) then you can activate a Deliveroo Perk. This will give you £5 back, twice per month, when you make a purchase through Deliveroo.

Spending on your Amex card will also earn you Membership Reward points at a 1/£ rate, which you can then swap to Avios or Virgin Points at a rate of 1:1.

Is Deliveroo membership worth it?

If you order regularly from Deliveroo, then membership will save you money. I’m not sure the Gold perk is worth the price, but if you can pick up Silver for free, then you really have nothing to lose.

The most valuable perk is the reduced delivery fees. This, however, does not reduce all fees to zero. Delivery fees are just one of the fee types that are levied. You may be charged a fee if your order is small, (under £15 and you’ll be charged £2) and there’s also service fees (11% of the order, with a minimum of 99p, and a maximum of £2.99).
